Day 1 (6/23/05)

As our heroes gathered, the strange Kobold prophet spoke a chill prophesy: The Destructor has gathered his forces. (Or maybe it was champions).

Dog and Texter of Tyr (the party's liaison in Waterdeep) suggest that "The Destructor" probably refers to Talos, an evil, chaotic, storm god. (Whose symbol is three bolts of lightning converging on a single point.) His cult and followers want nothing less than the destruction of civilization.

Texter explained that Waterdeep's navy and others along the Sword Coast have suffered from pirate attacks. Waterdeep has suffered the most losses, *edited by DM: is missing roughly two dozen ships.

Chief among their losses is Herevyn, "The Sword of the Seas;" one of the four protectors of Waterdeep. The other three remain in the city, but Waterdeep's military commander, Paladinson went in search of Herevyn. Paladinson has not returned, either.

Texter explained that the mighty PCs have been gathered to determine the fate of Herevyn and Paladinson. To aid us, Captain Jezebel and her mate/gunnery sergeant, Thux Blacksoot, have made "The Eternal" available to us. The Eternal is a powerful and enchanted ship plated in black metal. The ship generates its own wind and can fly through the water at over 86 knots. The cannon can fire themselves and are aimed by voice command from any of the ships' crew. The ship also has a heads-up display, GPS, and fancy beds.

The heroes head out, and on the second day of their journey encounter a raging storm. The storm expands and moves uncannily across the water as though chasing The Eternal. Kobold summons a water elemental and sends it to investigate, where it finds that there are two ships within the storm, on an intercept course with The Eternal.

Before long, The Eternal finds itself blind within the storm, and enemy cannon fire erupts around our heroes, blasting their ship! Kobold looks for guidance within his visions, while the other companions do their best to confound their attackers. Shazz blasts the water with a massive fireball, hoping that the steam will grant them some cover from their enemies who seem able to target them despite the blinding clouds. Meantime, the Kobold's vision shows three colored lighting bolts and a dire creature with pale purple skin and inky eyes.

Following the sound of voices, The Eternal manages to pull up alongside a massive ship. All cannons fire, but as both ships are concealed by the storm, few hit. As the ships pull up alongside, they recognize that the ship is the Onyx Pike out of Waterdeep. It is one of the many lost ships.

Despite misgivings, our companions board the Onyx Pike and are given a confused account of what has befallen them. They claim to have been out for some months, but their cleric was injured, so they were unable to send a message back to Waterdeep. The mate calls the captain aboard, and the captain is clearly injured. Kobold senses evil about him and rushes to his aid, when suddenly...

MIND BLAST!!!

The captain reveals himself to be a mind flayer! Half of the party is stunned, and the enthralled crew of the Onyx Pike take advantage of their weakness. Shazz and Kobold do their best to fell the evil creature with magic, while Alienna, who stayed behind on The Eternal, transforms into a bear and tries to fight her way over to the 'Pike to assist her comrades.

Finally, Alieanna summons a blast of holy fire, and the mind flayer is incinerated!

But the victory is short lived, as the mysterious enemy ship comes about and blast the Onyx Pike to smithereens with a fusillade of cannon fire. The heroes and some of the 'Pike's crew manage to escape to The Eternal, and the enchanted ship skips across the waves to safety, leaving the storm far behind. Before escaping, Athrun has the presence of mind to retrieve a few items from the ash pile of the would-be-captain.

Among these possessions is a gem containing powerful abjuration magic and a map case. The map describes a series of islands around a massive maelstrom called the Mokk'vaas.

These islands exist nowhere on Jezebel's maps, and one is improbably located WITHIN the whirlpool itself! The party, and the dozen or so Waterdhavian soldiers, commit to investigating these mysterious islands, if indeed they truly exist.

Day 2 (6/30/05)

The Eternal returns to the scene of the battle, hoping to find survivors. The mysterious storm is gone. The crew find the debris field where the Onyx Pike was destroyed, but sadly, no others survived its destruction. With no other course to follow, it is decided to set out and explore the nearest of the two islands marked on the mind flayer's map. Jezebel sets course, and the Eternal speeds off. Everyone takes the opprotunity to rest. To the amazement of all, the powerfully enchanted Eternal even begins to heal its wounds from the cannon fire it suffered during the battle! Once, while on watch, Athrun thinks he sees something following them, but when he looks more closely, whatever it was has dissapeared beneath the waves.

After two days journey, the island comes into sight. Almost immediately, a spell strikes the ship, causing everyone to fall ill. The source soon becomes apparent, a vast shadow, directly beneath the Eternal. Alienna sees this, and dives into the water, transforming into a giant squid. She sees a massive Kraken shadowing the Eternal! She begins casting destructive spells of nature at it, as it continues to bombard the Eternal with spells of its own. Kobold bestows a spell allowing those near to him to be able to breath underwater, should it come to that.

The Kraken rises to the surface, grabbing the Eternal and stopping it dead in the water, causing almost all aboard to fall toward the bow. Righting themselves, the crew begin to hack at the tentacles hoping to free the ship. Athrun manages to cut through one which falls to the deck writhing. Soon thereafter, a magical darkness descends upon the deck. In the darkness, Shaz and Athrun are picked up and hoisted into the air. Dog cuts through the tentacle holding Athrun, who is then dropped into the water. Swimming down until he passes the magical darkness, he finds himself next to one of the creature's eyes. He slashes it, and it oozes a horrible ichor into the water around him. Shaz meawhile has been drug into the water. Kobold, flying over the magical darkness, sees this, and sensing that Shaz is badly hurt, dives in after him. Athrun is grabbed by another tentacle, when Alienna shows up, in her guise as a squid, and manages to free him. Together, they begin attacking the creature directly. Shaz is being brought to the creatures mouth. Just as the huge beak begins to close around him, the Kraken shudders and dies, having sustained too much damage. It begins sinking slowly. Kobold dives into the beak, heals Shaz, and helps him to the surface. Having seen something glinting inside the beak, Kobold then dives back inside. There, he finds a skeleton grasping a rod of some sort, along with a variety of treasure. Collecting all he can, he eventually changes the creatures buoyancy, and it returns to the surface.

Gathering on the deck, Kobold heals the injured. Athrun collects the lenses found on the body of the mind flayer and attempts to identify the rod. Using the more potent feature of the lenses, they discover that it is a Rod of Lordly Might, a powerful magic item indeed. As one of it's features is the ability to become a powerful axe, Kobold's attendant Dog takes custodianship of it. The gem seems to have something to do with the spell Freedom, but it's functionality isn't fully understood.

Continuing on to the island, the Eternal sights another ship, bearing the flag of Waterdeep. It is recognized as one of Waterdeep's two battleships, and Jezebel immediately does what she can to keep the Eternal out of sight, as the battleship carries thirty cannon per side. Everyone decides to circle the island, and approach the camp across the land.

Kobold uses this opprotunity to request a vision from his deity. In the vision, a meeting between a group of Naga (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/naga.htm), lead by one Scalebane, and two others, a pirate called Captain Slathus and a sorcerer called Phelador, is observed. In it, the Naga agree to some dark scheme to attack the Merpeople of Waterdeep, as part of an overall plan to destroy the city itself. As the vision fades, Shaz, who had been drug into the vision along with Kobold and Athrun, sees two red flickering eyes moving to join Phelador and Slathus.

Dog is sent to Waterdeep to warn the Lords. Alienna, in the meantime, has spied what looks to be signs of several groups of Harpies living on the island. The group prepares to set out to cross the island, hoping to gather more information about the camp, the ship, and her crew...

Day 3 (7/14/05)

The party returns to the ship to rest up, then arrange for Jezebel to return to the island the next morning. Finding a path, the party heads towards the volcano. We pass by two camps of harpies, but manage to sneak by without drawing their attention, with the aid of a silence spell cast upon a stone from the Kobold. On the way, a huge tiger attacks Dog. Albinae manages to pull the tiger off of Dog, and Alienna manages to calm it, until it begins to follow her obediently.

We arrive at a cave entrance, which is guarded by what appears to be a naga. Shaz becomes invisible, sneaks up to the naga, and hides the silenced stone in its armor, then returns to the group. The naga heads into the cave, and the party follows, surprising a group of three naga along with the guard. Albinae steps in, and stomps upon the ground, dropping all four. Taking advantage, Athrun follows, dispatching one before it can rise. Alienna directs the tiger to attack, and it leaps upon another. Shaz fires an orb of fire at a third, scorching it badly. Getting back up, one of the naga heads deeper into the tunnel. Dog and Kobold give chase. The others finish off the remaining naga, and retrieve their four sets of magical scale mail and four magical greatswords. Between Dog and Shaz, they make quick work of it.

The party prepares to head further into the tunnel. Athrun retrieves the silenced stone, and the party continues, following Shaz. We encounter two more naga, very large. One blocks the parties progress, while the other runs down the hall. The party takes on the naga, and continue. Reaching the end of the hallway, the party runs into the vision that was granted to Kobold earlier! The battle begins. The spellcasters all throw out summoning spells or evocations. Athrun leaps into the room, and strikes the spellcaster. Although he damages him, Athrun is immediately surrounded by wave of fire. Choosing an easier target, he instead targets the adjacent pirate, cutting him into pieces. The spellcaster sends a wave of colors at everyone, causing a variety of effects, but completely blasting Shaz. Albinae unleashes a breath weapon at the caster, who shrugs it off. Alienna calls an earthquake, which completely destroys the nagas except for the two largest specimens. Athrun tumbles across the battlefield, attacking the two naga. The hooded spellcaster summons a blade, which strikes Athrun multiple times. Kobold desperately sends healing spells to his companions. The spellcaster teleports out, leaving his naga allies on their own. They are quickly destroyed. Kobold casts a detection spell to try to locate Pheledor, and divines the following information. Pheledor is on this plane, he is not part of a community, and is currently located in a spire known as Pheledor’s Tower, which is in the Sea of Swords as is the island we currently occupy.

Day 4 (7/28/05)

After collecting any goods that we could find in the cavern where we last fought, we explored the two other paths out of the cave. One lead to another side of one of the Harpy camps that we had seen before. The other lead through what seemed to be an old lava tunnel, and emptied out a distance from the shore, with the Sea Stallion and camp visible in the distance. Shaz noticed that the crew seemed to be leaving the camp, and heading towards two dinghies on the shore. Not wanting to let them disappear without learning if they were friend or foe, the party heads after them. By the time they reached the shore, one of the dinghies had already reached the ship, and the other was not too far away. Albinae rose aloft on his wings, and headed in pursuit, while the others waited on shore. As Albinae nears, he is spotted, and the sailors raise their muskets, firing on him. He calls out, hailing the sailors, and asking where they and their ship had been. A sailor wearing a hat yells out, ‘Take him down!’ As they begin firing at him again, he swoops down and grabs the behatted sailor, attempting to return him to the shore. Athrun fires off a volley from his bow, and Shaz launches a fireball at the deck of the ship. Kobold and Dog teleport over to the ship, and cover the deck of the ship in fog. Dog spirals into the water, after being hit eight times with musket fire. Kobold attempts to land aboard the ship, while Shaz covers the deck in a layer of ice. Meanwhile, the cannons aboard the Sea Stallion let fly, and the shore erupts in fire. The nimble Shaz manages to avoid any damage, while Athrun is surrounded in flame. Shaz fires off a fireball at the side of the ship, while Athrun seeks cover in the caverns that they had left. Dog teleports back to the Eternal. Albinae bears his captive back towards the island, landing, and following Athrun. Kobold meanwhile, sneaks below decks, and detects several evil presences. Entering a room, he encounters five officers, along with someone really fancy looking, who is emanating an evil aura. Kobold clears his throat, alerting the others to his presence. While Athrun and Albinae head for the caves, Shaz continues his assault against the ship with fireballs. One enters one of the cannon portholes, and a series of explosions erupts from within the ship as powder stores are set off. The evil commodore facing Kobold points at him, and the officers with him attack, though none hit him. The commodore then strikes, hitting Kobold twice. Kobold steps back, and summons a room full of fire elementals, which all fall upon the commodore. The commodore tells Kobold, ‘You’ve stepped onto the wrong ship. My ship!’, and slays the fire elemental between himself and Kobold. The Kobold attempts to break whatever enchantment is hold the Waterdhavian officers in sway, then attempts to return above decks. As Shaz, Albinae, and Athrun continue to try to reach the safety of the caves, another cannonball lands near the group. Athrun drops immediately, but Albinae picks him up, and the group continues on. Kobold continues his escape, while his summoned fire elementals continue to swarm the hopelessly pinned commodore.

Dog, upon receiving some healing potions back aboard the Eternal, directs the ship back to the island. The others arrive back on the far side of the island, and while preparing to board, a voice is heard, saying, ‘Arise from your graves!’ Athrun returns to the land of the living, and all of the others find their wounds healed. They board the ship as the Sea Stallion rounds the island, firing. Jezebel spins the ships helm about, and the Eternal flees. She suggests that they head for the other island which had been found on the Ithilid’s map. Finding no better course, they accept, and they head for the whirlpool. During the trip, Kobold summons a Planetar, and bargains with it, arranging for it to aid Kobold when he was most in need. After a few days journey, a tower is seen on the horizon. As the Eternal nears, they see a small rocky island, with a tower upon it, surrounded by the gigantic whirlpool. Everyone watches in horror as a passing flock of birds is struck by a burst of lightning, which flies from the water to the top of the tower, then strikes out, destroying the birds. Albinae flies out, and feels his hair stand on end as he nears the edge of the whirlpool. He then dives down below the surface, observing the whirlpool from beneath the waves. He sees four stones beneath the waves, which might be the source of the electricity. Alienna comes above deck, and says that she feels some creature suffering immense pain. The feeling seems to be coming from the whirlpool itself. Everyone discusses possibilities to penetrate the towers defenses.

It is suggested that it might be possible to use the spell freedom to attempt to free whatever creature was suffering. Thinking back to the gem found on the mind flayer, Kobold uses the lenses of identify to see that the stone can be used once, and will act as the spell freedom, and will be activated if someone holds it and calls out ‘Freedom’. Albinae activates the stone, and the whirlpool immediately begins to slow. An immense shape rises above the waves, makes a bubbling noise, and then disappears underwater.

Although the whirlpool is no more, Albinae soon realizes that the electrical protections are still in place. Kobold summons some birds in order to test the boundaries of the electrical protections. Though the birds were celestial in nature, and should have been resistant to electricity, they are instantly vaporized as soon as they enter the cylindrical area around the tower.

Day 5 (8/18/05)

We solved the puzzle by using the following spells: shocking grasp, lightning bolt, control wind, and chain lightning. Kobold conjures a water elemental to go down and complete the puzzle, allowing us to avoid any backlash from a failed answer. Once the water elemental has entered the answer, the lightning stops arcing about the tower.

Albinae then carries the party across, as there are no landings at water level for any sea craft.

Kobold sees some runes around the door, which Shaz recognizes as possible spells which have set to go off if anyone disturbs the door. Kobold attempts to dispel it, but fails. Shaz then attempts to disable the traps. After disabling two of the three protective spells, he fails at the third, and an arc of lightning strikes several of the party. On a second attempt, Shaz manages to disable the final spell, and the door slowly slides into the ground.

Torches light in sconces, revealing a very black interior and a spiral staircase leading up, with a metal plate at the base. A figure in a black silk robe is seen descending the staircase. He appears to be Pheledor, and he speaks to the party, telling them that their interference has caused him to move up his plans. He mentions Pieregion! At that, Albinae uses his breath weapon upon him. Pheledor slumps down, encased in ice. Thinking that that was too easy, Albinae expects an illusion, and tries to disbelieve. Immediately, the illusion disappears. Athrun runs upstairs, sees what looks to be a foyer, and continues up, Shaz following.

As they ascend the stairs, they hear strange voices and sounds coming from the foyer room. Casting detect magic, Kobold reports that there is a magical emanation coming from a wardrobe. Returning to this room, the party finds several magical cloaks, but before Kobold can use the glasses to identify them, everyone hears ghostly voices, and the party is attacked.

We defeat two ghosts (a cleric and a sorcerer), at one point, referring to Phelador as their master. Then pick a lock to get into the room above, and come across a bunch of women, some slain, while a few remain alive. One introduces herself as Nyssa and one as Anya. The party tries to rescue them. They succeed, but find themselves weakened by a level drain attack through a kiss, it seems. Not actually sensing any evil motive from them, the party lets them go, crosses through another room, and finds another staircase.

Placing a small tell on a door handle to warn of an ambush, the party proceeds up the stairs to the next level of the tower. Through the darkness, they see two red glowing eyes open from the other side of the room. As the torches in the room light a barely lit laboratory is revealed with a large red creature in a cage across the room from them. As it lifts itself in the cage, it shrouds itself in flame as it speaks. "I see we're all guests here...isn't that right Cleric?" As it glares in Kobold's direction. "I heard that you met the girls downstairs. Their screeching is intolerable. I do hope they've been slain. Would you be so kind as to release me from my cage? I can deliver upon you GREAT riches...power...whatever you desire. Just a simple action on your part can provide you with all the power you need to vanquish your foes."

The party resists the lure of the devil. Not wanting to have any part of its wishes. Suddenly, the tell is heard falling to the floor. It seems something comes from behind.

Investigation reveals little, when suddenly the two women from below teleport into the room. Athrun quickly responds, hurting one of the women badly. However, with a quick glare of the pure sexual energy within their eyes, Athrun and Shaz find themselves captivated. The voices in their head convincingly tell them to attack and kill their former comrades. Their will is no match to resist. Chaos insues as the friends do battle, Athrun slicing into his friends with gusto, Shaz releasing a chain of lightning upon the party. Albinae ignores the wounds he sustains from his friends and attacks the women, quickly defeating them, releasing his friends from their enchantment. The women, upon defeat seem to be reduced to clouds of vapor which quickly travel downstairs and through the gate at the bottom of the stairwell. Unable to follow them further, the group proceeds back to the laboratory and after a quick heal, up into the next level.

As their heads move into the next room the are greeted with an incredible sight. Three goblins stand around a human, restrained to a examination chair. Above which sits a large device, electricty arcing down the sides. A large metal ball sits on the end of a rod on which several discs are attached. On the sides of the room are two statues, roughly 50' high, carved into the obsidian walls in the form of skeletal deathknights. Highlights flicker throughout the room from large towers arcing electricity. The machine fires a ray into the head of the restrained human, as one of the goblins turns to notice the onlookers and yells out in alarm! All taking place in fractions of a second, the room begins to shake as the stone figures on the wall begin to slowly free themselves.

To be continued...

Day 7 (9/29/05)

The party manages to open the door we found at the base of the stairs, and head down them. We fight some mummies, get past them, find another door, head further down, find two coffins, and stake the two vampires found within. We find two rings on the vampires, which we take. There are no visible doors in this room, but there do seem to be seams in the walls. Ablinae tries to bash through with no luck. Prying at the seams also fails.
