GPS Adventure Race

Rules

The GPS adventure race is simple:

  1. 3 or more players meet at a central location with 1 GPS receiver and one FRS (or preferably GMRS) radio each.
  2. All players split off in more or less cardinal directions and pick a location within a maximum radio distance of all other players. (so if max radio is 2 miles, your max distance from the center point is 1 mile. GMRS allows a distance of 2.5 miles)
  3. Once at their designated location, players ring in and register their location with all other players.
  4. Once all locations have been registered, the race is on. Players must navigate to each point and back to the center point.
  5. The first player to the center point with a GPS track log over each point established wins the race.

Logistics

  • Players will need to agree upon a lattitude / longitude format that can be entered into every gps available.
  • Players will need to use standard radio communication techniques in order to stay in touch with eachother, and communicate location data to eachother. At maximum transmission distance transmissions will become garbled, which could disable the game.

Safety

Some rules will probably need to be set out for safety reasons such as what to do if radios fail, and a cutoff time where the game becomes a search and rescue operation, etc.

At the least, all players should probably carry the following:

  • an emergency whistle to aid searching if something goes wrong.
  • a first aid kit
  • water
  • sunscreen
  • batteries

Possible Locations

This area is an alright place to camp.. down by twin lake reservoir. Water is available (usually) it's high and cool. Also, within about.. a 3 mile hike is an old b17 crash, which might be a fun day trip. Image:Crasharea.jpg Here's another photo of the area, with waypoints. TL stands for 'twin lakes' Cam Camp is where my friend cameron camped last time we were out there. TL Turn is where the road turns into an easy jeep trail up to the lake area, no problem for a truck or orf's escape.

The trailhead waypoint isn't where we started when we did the hike, there's another trailhead near the Cam Camp waypoint. Image:Areal_photo_with_waypoints.jpg

This area is probably even a bit higher, I've done alot of snowshoeing up in this area, and the lake areas are nice. I'm sure there is camping in this area, but i'm not sure if it's regulated or not. Image:Laketown.jpg

Dense trees can easily defeat both GPS reception and FRS radio coverage. GMRS might be the way to go if possible because it will penetrate better.
